Chile from the 9th of December to the 23rd 2007.

from San Pedro Atacama to Antofogasta to La Sirena to Valparaiso and Vina del Mar to Santiago.

crossed the border a few times on foot and once on the bus.

so i met Chelsey and Michelle properly in La Paz and was asked if i wanted to join on trip through Salar de Uyuni. so i did. 7 to 9 of December 2007 this is.

and here we are. backseat of the 4wd for the three day car trip.

after Machu Picchu i headed to Arequipa w/ my friend Marsha. while in Arequipa i also saw the ice princess at a local museum. a frozen mummy of an Incan sacrifice. unfortunately no photos allowed.

and i finally made it to Machu Picchu, one of the most incredible sights i have been to. just... WOW!

these are from October 24th to November 21st... or so.

as i volunteered in Pisco w/ Hands On Disaster Response.

most of city was destroyed by an earthquake in August and so we were working clearing rubble, building temporary houses, temporary classrooms, working w/ kids in ludotecas in the refugee camps and other assorted works.

had weekends away at Huacachina, a small oasis town in the nearby desert.

Huacachina and one of it's most famous residents, Marvin the monkey.

volunteers in Ica. overall we had 60 to 80 volunteers everyday between the different sites. most in Pisco.

Peru was playing Brazil and we watched it at the house of local family (cooks for project) and this was the grandfather after Peru scored.

went trekking through the santa cruz trek, a four day walk through the cordillera blanca. about eight hours north of lima. amazing place.

so i was staying w/ Ivy, who just happened to be having a girls night at her place... so had to change it to girls night plus dennis.

at post office in brooklyn. crazy eighty old woman came in swearing at everyone. hilarity ensued.

lost and found bar in greenpoint. met up w/ Julia (from Gutemala) and had a few drinks there. nice.

at san salvador airport. finally got my el salvador stamp on passport. on my fourth time in the country.

w/ Andrew. probably the only Tongan i will ever meet while travelling south america.

spent just over three weeks in Honduras. mostly diving in Utila, but also a few days in Copan.
both amazing places.

diving was done at Alton's Dive shop. this be their dock.

saw lot's of fish down there. hours upon hours spent under water.

slva vidas, the label on page, is of local beer. salva vida in Guatemala is a water brand. same difference.

salva vidas translates to 'life saver'

w/ Dee, Christina and Dave. who i hung out w/ a bit while in Utila. our life savers on hand of course.

Belize it or not

went to Belize my second time in June sometime.

used a flower from Tikal for dress.

entrance to Actun Tunichil Muknal, cave system in Belize used by Mayans for ceremonial purposes over a thousand years ago. abandoned since 900's AD.

you swim, wade and climb through nearly a kilometre before getting to the dry area, where the camera came out.

some pottery from offerings to the gods. laid out like this after the offering was complete. smoke on ceilings still. and hundreds of artifacts all around.

and skulls. well two of them anyways.

at the end you enter a chamber that has this full female skeleton, calcified a fair bit, from a human sacrifice.

all the minerals reflect all the light from torches magnificently.

start of my last travel trip (away from Antigua)in Central America which took me through Guatemala, Belize and Honduras.

and i'm off

at El Retiro lodge in Lanquin...

...which was full so we stayed next door at Yax Lik, which was cheaper anyways. in the morning this chicken was by the toilet and wouldn't get out. in the afternoon after we got back there was an egg in it's place.

day tripped to Semuc Champay. swim in these crystal clear pools of freshwater.

the river runs through a cave system under the pools for about 300 meters

and after Semuc Champay we (me and two others) went caving in Kan 'Ba caves... w/ just a cadle for light. you have to swim some stretches holdig the candle out of the water. was awesome!

and then went to Tikal and Flores again. temple IV for sunrise... unfortunately it was cloudy and misty so didn't see the sunrise (2nd time, previous time in december it was raining).

el salvadoring for the third time

went to El Salvador for my third time at the beginning of June. another stay at El Roble, Darren and Seka's great hostel in San Diego (La Libertad), w/ a crew of great people. some of us hanging out for a last time together before leaving Central America...

quiet days bring a lot of movies. 'Harold and Maude' is another amazing film. one of the best i'd say. seen it four or five times in last two weeks.

another last voyage to Frank's land. Kenny and I stayed overnight. and the 'grateful daddies' (me, Kenny and Frank) recorded four songs that night.

this is Carlos, Leticia (Leti) and Jennifer. little local kids that hang around sometimes. their mother sells wares down the road and they spend days together. lately they have been skateboarding a lot on two boards. other day walked by and Carlos was pushing Leti and Jennifer on the bigger board and got the happiest 'hola' from little Jennifer at the front as they rolled by.

a Garifuna band came to Antigua a while back in February. played Punta music, Garifuna's mostly live on the Caribbean side.

so we went to the lake again for a bit of relaxation and to just get away for a while.

on the saturday the Buddha Bar played the Dark Side of the Rainbow (Pink Floyds 'dark side of the moon' synched up w/ the Wizard of Oz) and it was brilliant. just so many connections. afterwards Jereme and I went to Freedom to laugh at some trance dancers. this was best photo of the bunch. notice the arms out and head back, w/ a visor upside down.

for Jez and Tim's farewell we had a Paca (local second hand clothes market) party. here we are in our great outfits. Jez, me, Tim, Shaun and Kenny. paid aboit 6 quetzales for my outfit (or about $1 australian). outside Irish bar where i work in Antigua

to promote the party we hired a horse and cart, got an esky full of beer and rode around Antigua in our fancy dress costumes telling people about it. here is one of the famous Guatemala chicken buses, full of colour.

just two kids, Amadeu (3) and Edgar (5), who come down from Lake Atitlan most weekends to sell some wares. really cool kids and whenever they come by i usually give them a drink (free of course) and they hang out for a bit and rest from selling. somethimes there will be half a dozen or so kids hanging around. drawing or just talking and mucking around. freaked a few people out by giving these two lemonade in two shot glasses as a joke.

Kenny and i were painting a school in Jocotenango when during our break this came by. the heartbreaker (rompe corazones)

and here is Kenny painting the front of Escuela Esperanza (means Hope in spanish) which was started by Dave, a Scottish guy who comes by once in a while.

inside the school, after lunch kids washing their plates. little girl in background is daughter of one of cooks and played around for a while. peek-a-boo and laughing all that was needed

the coolest thing i have seen on this trip so far... or one of them at least. was climbing up to and seeing Pacaya volcano erupting. you can't describe seeing it. pictures look cool but being there was 1000000000 (give or take a few) times even more impressive.
another cool thing which i appreciate is everytime i walk out of my place here in Antigua all i have to do is look south down the street and looming over the town is a volcano, Agua it's called, and it's extinct so no worries. off to other side can also see two other volcanoes. Fuego still smokes and glows.

the Reilly's christmas party came about on the 2nd of January. even though i was yet to have my first shift there (at Reillys Irish Tavern) i was invited along. great fun day

w/ some backyard cricket during the day. that's Kenef bowlin, Jezza fielding and me batting. Kenny got the stumps and bat made at the local market for a few quetzales.

you better belize it

visited Belize for two weeks or so during the christmas period. (had to leave Guatemala as my 90 day visa was up)

first town we stayed in was San Ignacio close to the border. an adventure getting there as it had rained for the last week or so so all the roads leading to the border were just full of mud and no bus could go through. ended up having to get on the back of a pickup which came close to tipping over at one stage. met a local in San Ignacio who told us of this little known waterhole in a close by village called Cristo Rey so we got a taxi there. after asking a few people we finally found the spot. really cool chilled swimming hole.

eventually left it for Dangriga. needed some beach time.

not quite as good as we expected the actual beach (not enough sand and a bit dirty) so we went further south to ...

Placencia. now this place was pretty cool. it also has the worlds narrowest main street. which is a metre wide walkway that winds parallel to the beach. relaxed town

...

had a dream i was skating. woke up very happy

while in Placencia we went swimming one night and there was phosphorescence in the water. it looked amazing as you moved and swam around

in Ambergris Caye. one arvo Khris and I (Khris and Steph came down from the US for xmas) sat at a bar w/ some of the worst music (some redneck country music, no seriously one of chorus lines was "I'm just a redneck in a rock'n'roll bar") and there were a few kids out playing in the water for ages. looked so much fun

Jereme, a mate from Sydney, who i met in Guate, many a funny night w/ him and rest of Antigua crew. we are 'get a dog up ya!'. wait until you see the Australia day tee's we are designing

tikal had a load of animals, can't remember what these are called but there were also toucans, other birds and monkeys (one tried to shit on us from up the tree as we were looking up at them).

temple V. on first day we only saw temple VI as we got there at 16:30 or so and the curfew is 18:00 and pretty much as soon as we walked in it started raining. so we took shelter and waited for rain to stop... it didn't so we started walking back out close to 18:00. it was dark and we had no torch so could barely see in front of us... then there were all the water pools on the path. just had to venture forth as there was no way any of us was stepping into the jungle to go around water. impressive jungle all around, so easy to get lost there i imagine.

Kenny and i had decided to go to a local barber w/ Tim and Jereme and get haircuts. only thing was that as Kenny sat on the chair Tim, Jereme and i got to pick his haircut and he couldn't say a thing about it. then it was my turn to go through it. end result... what you see in photo.
